Changing our Culture

Hey, I need your input! I want this to be more than just random ramblings by Bethany. :)

We see it everywhere, family gatherings, work parties, church functions, celebrations, etc. where we get together and eat food. Lots of food. Typically not healthy food. And sometimes that's the extent of it. Everything starts or ends with a treat (or both). What ever happened to getting together to enjoy the company of those around us, or teach each other new skills? Why are we allowing ourselves to forget how to play? How often do we get together to have some fun and do something enjoyable, rather than eating?

We've developed this extremely strong culture and it's a little bit worrisome to me. I was at a party recently where just about every person had a HEAPING pile of desserts as they left the treat table. Not just one or two to try (and certainly not small pieces either) but an entire plate full. Really? How have we gotten to the point where we don't realize this is a problem?

On the other hand, there is so much junk food available, that kids don't get excited when a pinata is broken open at a party or when they go to a trunk-or-treat, which is pretty much the easiest candy jack pot known to man. This tells me that they're getting it too often and probably too much to. It's hardly a "treat" anymore and certainly isn't special. These different scenarios baffle me a little.

Ok, enough of the rambling and in the spirit of keeping my posts positive (as I've promised), I want to shift our culture to where we eat real food the majority of the time; because don't get me wrong, I LOVE enjoying quality food with people I care about! I'd love to see us getting together to do something active or even simply be present and enjoy each other's company (ditch the cell phone for a couple of hours). It would be awesome to be surrounded by tons of people living in the moment and supporting each other in positive goals. I want us all to not only live but live well!

Do you want this too? How can we do it? I realize the best place for me to start is with myself but how do we spread it from there? I know that it will take time but that change is possible! What things are you currently doing to try and shift our culture in a positive direction? Please leave a comment! I'd love to know of your ideas, current efforts, and if any of this resonates with you!
